Product Description

The Gan name in the Pinarello line means you get an awesome bike derived from Tour de France-winning steeds, at a price that you can afford without blanching. There are several varieties of Gan. The molds derived from Chris Froome’s Dogma F8 covers the Gan RS, S, and Gan, with the main differences being the carbon-fiber employed in the lay-up.

So you get the same aero shaping, the same geometry, the same position, and largely the same ride across the Gan line. The difference is in the material mix. The carbon layup features T600 cloth, which isn’t as light or stiff as the higher-priced stuff. So Pinarello employs more of it, so that the resulting frame as most of the same ride qualities, just at a lower cost. When you include the Gan Easy-Fit, which we do, you get fourteen sizes to choose from, so one will certainly fit.

And the frame itself learned its tricks from the flagship F8. Pinarello sculpted the frame tubes to separate the wind with minimal turbulence. You can see it in the extended head tube, the way the fork crown nestles in a notch in the downtube, the aero fork legs, the FlatBack down and seat tubes and the shorter, lower seat stays. The shaping also owes to the need to make the bike stiff and comfortable. A problem with traditional airfoil tube shaping is that they make a bike vertically stiff and laterally compliant, the reverse of what people need. By shortening the profile of the down and seat tubes, they still have vertical give. And by cutting the tubes off at their wide point, there is still plenty of lateral stiffness to fight pedal forces. And this is before we get into Pinarello’s traditional asymmetric tube designs, where they have already built in resisting pedaling forces.

The F8 has a geometry built for light super flexible riders. The GAN is built for the rest of us, similar position, just with more stack and less reach: it’s easy to get comfortable and feel powerful on the GAN thanks to the fact your bars don’t have to be so low. Basically, the big difference is a shorter top tube and higher head tube. Seat angles, when comparing the F8 to the Gan are basically the same, as is the bottom bracket drop, a stable 72mm in most sizes, the fork rake, 43mm. The Gan has an extra 2mm of chainstay length in most sizes, meaning you have room to squeeze in some slightly bigger tires.

The Gan also boasts many of the cool design extras of the F8. tapered 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” steerer. Aero stem and seatpost. Think2 internal cable routing-which works with mechanical, electronic, or hydraulic systems. If you go the electronic route, the battery goes in the seatpost, though you’ll need an accessory adapter if your bike doesn’t come with electronic shifting. The bottom bracket is the reliable Italian threaded standard-easy for servicing. The max tire width guaranteed to fit is 25mm, which means you can probably squeeze some fatter rubber in there, just Pinarello makes no promises. And the frame is UCI-approved, in case your new bike leads you to crush your local pro and the slaying thereof earns you a ticket to the big leagues, but not enough to merit a new bike.

The Pinarello Gan is the start of a beautiful riding life.
