GENERAL INFORMATION

Pinarello fans were treated to an up and down ride with the introduction of the Il Bolide time trial frameset in 2013. It was famously ditched by Sky's Bradley Wiggins in its debut run at the Giro. Then Sky's Chris Froome piloted it to two time trial victories at the 2013 Tour de France, which is only the beginning of what is sure to be a great run of success.

The Bolide, or "missile" in Greek, has fifteen percent less drag than the Graal it succeeds, in large part thanks to the input of British Cycling's Dimitris Katsanis, who also designed the Team GB bikes seen at the 2012 Olympics. The frame's lines are as long as they can be while still fitting into the 3:1 ratio the UCI provides. It's certainly a swoopy stunner, and the integrated brakes with fairings and wide legs are design elements Katsanis brought over.

Even with the overriding concern of aerodynamics, the bike still employs the asymmetries  you find throughout Pinarello's carbon-fiber offerings. The efforts are more subtle in appearance due to aerodynamics, but rest-assured, underneath it all, they've built more material in different places on different sides to better resist the uneven forces a rider puts on a bike. One asymmetry that Pinarello shares with many other time trial bikes is that of a tapered steerer tube. The integrated headset here has a 1 1/8" upper race mated with a 1 1/4" lower, to make sure that the bike tracks well in corners.

The frameset is built out of 65KM1k carbon-fiber, aka high modulus plies. These fine fibers, 1,000 wefts per square cm, which helps it resist 65 tons of force, are, light and stiff. The frameset is five percent lighter than the Graal it succeeds. Built into the fabric is Toray's Nanoalloy Technology, a way of embedding nanoparticles that prevents fiber from fracturing under stress. Keeping with the maximizing stiffness minimizing weight theme, the bottom bracket standard is BB86—they could build the frame wider and save you the weight and  hassle of external bottom bracket cups.

The bike is fairly flexible in a few ways. One is that you don't have to specify electronic or mechanical shifting; Think2 allows you to have it internally routed both ways, with the battery sitting inside the frame and a charger port easily accessible if you go electronic. Another cool flexible feature is the removable front derailleur hanger—If you don't need a small ring, you won't need a derailleur.

Making sure the bike is as aerodynamic as possible, the brakes are built into the frame and are hidden by shrouding that passes UCI muster. Nicely, they're conveniently placed in front of the fork and behind the seat stays, traditional positions that make them easy to work on. Also for aerodynamics, there are extra bottle bosses on the down tube to optimize bottle position.

The handlebars come with and are integrated with the stem and frame. The base bar, complete with integrated brakes is 40cm wide. The extensions can be adjusted for width, length, and height. The narrowest position is 110mm between the pads, as measured from center of each extension and can be widened to 190mm in four 20mm steps. To further fine-tune, the pads themselves can move 14mm left or right when in any of those four positions. With the extensions, you have a choice between straight and a 23-degree ski-bend. The integrated stem comes in two sizes, 10cm or 12cm long, and each has 1cm of fore-aft adjustment. The integrated seatpost also offers you a choice, that between 22mm of setback and no setback at all.

The Pinarello Il Bolide turns a person into a human-powered, UCI-approved missile. A neat trick for a time trial bicycle.
