Product Description

When BMC thought about expanding their Crossmachine range, they wanted to add versatility to it. The answer was the CXA01 105 Bike. While the A stands for aluminum, it could also stand for adventure.

The frameset is UCI-approved for racing. However, it is not the CX01’s geometry directly translated into aluminum. The head tube is a bit taller and there’s more rake in the fork. This tweak allows the frame to work not only for ‘cross, but gravel racing, off-road riding, and following you whims so you can stray far, far from home and pedal the whole way.

As you expect from BMC, the frame is fabricated out of shaped, triple-butted aluminum. To minimize the harshness that some fear aluminum provides, they’ve designed the frame, particularly the stays with their Tuned Compliance Concept. The seatstays give vertically, and the carbon seatpost is also TCC, their compliancepost design in 27.2mm diameter (and 18mm setback). The fork, which is carbon from tips to the top of the steerer, has a tapered 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” steerer, and also features TCC, for lateral stiffness and vertical comfort. There are hidden mounts for racks and fenders, if you go for cleaner clothes and hauling stuff.

The disc brake rotors are 160mm here, rather than the 140mm you’ll find on the CX01. The thinking is that as the bike will be on more varied terrain and could experience higher speeds, the extra leverage and heating dissipation will better control the bike. The IceTech rotors, think added cooling, are stopped by Shimano’s hydraulic BR-R785 calipers.

The calipers stop DT Swiss X-1900 Spline wheels, a 29er cross-country wheelset. While they’re tubeless compatible, the stock tires are the tubed Continental Cyclocross Speed, folding, in 35mm width. The tire is more of an all-around tire than one that really digs into dirt, but reflects the way BMC sees the bike being ridden. If you want to race cx, you’re probably best-off on tubular tires anyway.

Shimano is the supplier BMC turned to for most components. While only the derailleurs sport the 105 logo, the parts all come from this level in Shimano’s world. Gearing is 22-speed, with a 46/36 double-ring crank and 11-32 eleven-speed cassette for a wide range that works well on road and off.

The BMC Crossmachine CXA01 105 Bike reflects BMC’s focus on pragmatism and fun. Take it on an adventure, whether it’s around the corner, into the madness of cyclocross, or out on roads that disappear.
