Product Description

BMC has been into cross pretty much since there was a BMC, thanks to their Swiss heritage. But this is the first time since 2009 that a dedicated crosser, the Crossmachine CX01, is in the lineup.

The passage of the years means that BMC's knowledge has increased and their technology has drastically improved. This bike looks like the love child of their current SLR01 and Granfondo frames, with the SLR01 having the dominant genes. Which goes a way toward explaining how the frame comes in at 1100g including all hardware in a size 54. And with the right components could easily have a sixteen-pound complete bike.

In truth, the frameset is the result of BMC's Accelerated Composites Evolution programming. They fed in what they were looking for and ACE tried out all the variables. For the demands of cyclocross, tube shapes similar to the SLR01, with the Tuned Compliance Concept (TCC) with angle compliance, to add vertical compliance to the ride. Vertical flex works in two ways: it keeps the wheels on the ground when it is bumpy and it keeps the impacts moving up from the wheels away from your back and arms. They also include their compliancepost with 3mm setback (18mm and 30mm are also available) to both further damp the ground-created outputs and position you perfectly. Put together, you have a frame that is easy to carry, easy to ride up steep hills. When you get to the top, the geometry, classic Euro 'cross, with a high bottom bracket and aggressive angles will allow you to take on tight turns and side hills and pedal all the way through as well as piloting the perfect line as competitors slide around you.

Owing to the march of time, this frameset has features that are not only current, but forward-thinking. It's disc-brake only, mechanical or hydraulic, set up for 140mm rotors (you can put a max of 160mm up front), with the calipers positioned on post mounts. The line from the front brake lever to the front brake caliper has a uniquely clean routing: from the head tube through the fork. The steerer is a tapered 1 1/8" to 1 1/2". The headset, of course, is internal. The cables run outside if they're mechanical, inside if electronic: the beauty of Dual Transmission Integration. The bottom bracket standard is BB86, which means you don't need cups for the bearings, both for weight savings and better material manipulation and can run most standard cranks.

This bike is UCI-approved for cyclocross.  All the same, the bike can run 35mm cyclocross tires no problem and can fit in some less-aggressive 38mm tires.

It's also important to note that this frameset comes with a front derailleur hanger. The current complete bike, which is spec'd with SRAM Force CX1, does not.

The BMC Crossmachine CX01 Frameset is what happens when BMC's engineering meets up with a need to speed on 'cross courses.
